One of the most difficult aspects of losing weight can be staying motivated, particularly if you are working to meet a large weight loss goal. Over time, as weight loss begins to taper off and become more difficult to achieve, temptations become stronger and it becomes easier to slip into old patterns.

Studies have shown time and time again; however, that individuals who are more successful in terms of meeting their weight loss goals are those who have the biggest motivation factors.

So, how do you get motivated to lose weight? Even if you have acknowledged that you want and need to lose weight that may not be enough to maintain self-control each and every day. Without the right kind of motivation it is far too easy to become discouraged, give in to temptation and put off weight loss plans indefinitely.

While some people seem to have some sort of internal motivation that drives them to achieve their weight loss goals, most us need something more to keep us going. There are several different ways you can build motivation in your weight loss plans.

1.Enlist a buddy to lose weight with you. A friend working toward the same goal can be a great motivation factor. Not only can you commiserate about the difficulties of losing weight together but you can also hold one another responsible for meeting goals.

2.Consider rewarding yourself for every milestone met. Ideally, it’s best not to reward yourself with food items, but occasionally a special snack can be a good way to treat yourself for losing an additional five pounds. Other great ideas include a new CD, DVD, manicure, etc.

3.Keeping a weight loss journal is also an excellent way to record how far you’ve come and keep yourself motivated to go the extra mile. Review your progress when you’re feeling down and congratulate yourself on all you’ve accomplished.

4.Sign a contract committing yourself to your weight loss goals. When you put your goals down on paper they become more real and as a result you feel more motivated to achieve them. For example, you might write up a contract with yourself that says you will commit to exercising thirty minutes every day in addition to eating more fruits and vegetables.

5.Join a weight loss support group. Statistics indicate that individuals who participate in a support group are more likely to lose weight than those who do not. Consider joining either a support group that meets in your local area or even one online. The point is to share your struggles and your joys regarding your weight loss with others who are going through the same process.

Staying motivated and exercising self-control is a key component to any successful weight loss plan.

Some people try nearly every kind of new dieting idea that comes along hoping that one of them would finally work but end up finding it hard to stick to the diet and instead of finding the miracle, they end up consistently failing to lose the weight.

Obviously, these people fail to understand what prevents them from losing weight as they tend to overlook their own mistakes.

The human brain displays a remarkable ability of ignoring the things it does not want to face, it’s not hard to understand why some people eat all manner of things and still claim they haven’t touched anything but salad for a whole week.

If you don’t want to become one of these people then don’t worry there are ways around these problems if you just stick to some pointers then you should be fine.

To avoid compulsions and temptations one point is to make your eating a conscious act. The easiest way to do this is to carry around a notebook and a pen and to write down everything you eat and this means everything including that half eaten kit-kat you might have found in the fridge. By the end of the day you will have a list in the book of how many things you actually eat on a regular basis. you will be surprised at the results!

For most people eating and drinking are acts that bypass rational thinking and you should try to bring them out of the twilight zone. So every time you reach out for a drink or some food, stop and ask yourself “Why am I doing this?”.

Thirst and hunger should be the only legitimate reason you should NOT be drinking or eating for reasons such as boredom, loneliness, depression, tiredness or stress.

Put the bottle down if you’re not thirsty. Put the food back on the shelf or on the table if you’re not hungry.

Do you crave sweets because you’re tired? If so, getting more sleep will give you more energy instead of relying on bad sugars to give you that burst of energy.

Do you feel the need to eat because you’re lonely and depressed? Try going to the cinema or visit a friend. Read a book, watch a movie or listen to some music. There are options you just have to keep yourself active and not rely on food.

One of the biggest mistake in dieting is starving yourself. You should never starve yourself, unless you have enough willpower but even then you will break down sooner or later and eat the first thing that you can get your hands on, and usually snacks and junk food is the case.

When you starve yourself you make your body go into power save mode which limits your energy levels and hangs on to your existing fat. Your body doesn’t actually know the difference between dieting and starvation so it will behave as in danger, therefore eating 3 meals a day, plus snacks consisting of fruit and vegetables is the best way if your wanting to lose the weight.

Banishing your favorite foods completely is not a good idea as it will only sap your own willingness to stick to the diet. One main key to dieting is think moderation, not denial. If you like a little bit a chocolate, adding a little treat once a week doesn’t hurt and another good idea is to take a break from whatever it is you’re doing and enjoy this special treat. Keep any guilt pains away and don’t feel like you’re cheating on the diet as in fact you’re just dieting, not preparing for admission to a convent or monastery.

So have a bit of forbidden food every five days or so and enjoy the moment.

Of course, exercising comes with every part of dieting, exercise is a must. Start small if you’re not used to exercising there’s no need to rush into hour-long training sessions.

Five minutes per day will do for starters. Get a treadmill and a pair of dumbbells and make your own schedule. Two minutes and a half of running and two minutes and half of curls. Every week increase the time spent exercising by another five minutes and add new exercises. Your goal should be to spend at least 30 minutes every day working out your body. Sixty minutes is even better, but it will come in time. It’s OK to start small.

By following the above your weight loss will be successful.

There must be hundreds of small weight loss tips that can be provided to anyone who is currently on a diet or trying to loss weight. I remember very clearly how my grandmother would provide all of us kids with various ways in which we could cut back on the calories. I would like to relate a few of Granny’s tips here.

Granny never was much of a person to turn down cookies. In fact she would always encourage us children to eat a cookie in the evening. Most people think that when you are on a diet you should cut out all the high calorie items such as cookies but that is far from the truth.

Granny would tell us how the mere act of putting our favorite foods off limits would eventually lead us to what she referred to as “rebound eating”. She would tell us that in place of cutting out her home made cookies completely we should merely eat a single one of her fresh baked cookies instead of a hand full. She would always lecture us that if we wished to enjoy our favorite foods we could do so and still lose weight but we merely had to do so in moderation. That was granny for you.

I never could understand why my mother never brought any of granny’s cookies home with her. Instead we would have to go to grannies and eat them there. Finally I was informed that one of grannies favorite weight loss tips was not to eat the food at home. Never take home cookies or candy. We were always told that it was better to enjoy our treats at grannies house. Whenever we wanted a special treat mother would pack us all in the family car and tote us off to visit granny. I later found out that this tip from granny was the reason we make an adventure out of going out to eat. By making our visit into an adventure we never have to worry about the temptations relating to having the treats in the home. In the end it was a fun way to visit with granny as well as a unique way to try and lose weight.

Mini-meals were one of granny’s favorite weight loss tips and I finally found out why they were important to her. Granny would serve us several mini meals each day when we would visit her. Finally she revealed the reasoning behind these types of weight loss tips. She would always point her finger to her stomach and remark that if we eat fewer calories than we burn then we will lose any extra weight. Granny was a wise women for she knew that it was a real challenge to go hungry all the time therefore it was her philosophy that we should eat 4 or 5 mini-meals each day.

In support of grannies actions recent studies have revealed that those people that eat four or five meals per day are much better able to adequately control their appetite resulting in better control over their weight. Let’s chalk another one up for granny’s wisdom.

In my eyes the best weight loss tip that granny gave to us was that we should eat protein at each of our meals. Once again granny would preach to us that protein would build strong bones and muscles in our little bodies and allow us to grow up strong and healthy.

Okay let’s provide granny with another blue ribbon. She was actually very correct in her assumptions. Protein has been found to build up muscle mass and it tends to encourage fat burning. So all that yogurt, nuts, cheese, and beans that granny feed us worked very much to our advantage.

In conclusion all I can say is that if your granny tells you something is good for you then by golly she must be right after all mine was!
