The ToughShell from Speck is a follow-up to the company’s other recent rugged case, the ToughSkin. The TouchShell has a some pretty interesting design concepts for the growing multi-layered rugged category. Like rugged cases from Otterbox, Griffin, and others, the iPhone is placed into a hard plastic shell and then wrapped with a rubber skin. Typical designs involve a whole skin, however, the ToughShell has a hinged design that peels back. Also the rubber functions as a bumper and not a whole skin. It may not offer maximum shock/drop protection, but the case is in turn slimmer, seems a better fit, and more stylish. The case features good grip points all around and also offers covered port/control covers. The ToughShell also comes with a static screen protector that can be applied by the customer. Lastly there is a belt clip shell that adds additional protection and can double as a table stand. The ToughShell is available in black and lists for $49.95. www.speckproducts.com Speck ToughShell rugged case for iPhone 4 (Review)

The Defender from Otterbox is one of the favorites in the most rugged category of iPad 2 cases. The product features protection for drops and shocks, in addition dust intrusion. The case covers the iPad 2′s ports and controls and offers multiple layers of plastic and rubber protection. The case also comes with a screen protector. With each iteration of the Defender, it’s interesting to see different ideas from Otterbox. The case retains multilayer protection with a hardshell enclosure and rubber skin. Along with the iPad 2′s slimmer design, the Defender this time around feel like a more sleek option. Also tweaked is the dock connector flips up for easy docking vs a separate slide out piece. The external shell of the case is removable to protect the screen or stowed on the back of the iPad. The shell also has a stand option which allows the iPad to be positioned for keyboard entry. The case weighs in at just over a pound, so it’s definitely for those looking to maximize protection of their iPad. The iPad 2 Defender case is available now in Black and lists for $89.95. Otterbox said other colors will be available at a later date. www.otterbox.com
