How can featherweight glasses be thinner for stronger perscription?

This is a physics question I have, regarding lenses and focusing,

It is possible to purchase “featherweight” glasses whose lenses are quite thin. For a person who has a fairly strong prescription (highly-curved lenses), this is a welcome relief. For the same prescription (the same focal length), the “featherweight” glasses are thinner and less curved. How is this possible?
